It was a perfectly normal fall day on the east coast, the rain came down in sheets and the icy wind was blowing so hard it was difficult to remain on one’s feet. Kori hated these kinds of days, not because it was raining and not because it was cold, she hated it because the sun wasn’t out and she couldn’t feel it on her skin. She was also forced to wear such restrictive, concealing clothing. Concealing wasn’t really the right word, she wasn’t exactly trying to flaunt anything. But not being able to feel the sun on her skin was disheartening.
Regardless the Tameraenian Princess was out, braving the streets of Metropolis on this rain soaked day participating in an old and noble earth custom…shopping. Not for herself, though she never hesitated to indulge in that little pleasure. No, today she was shopping for her friends. The holidays were “Right around the corner” as Garfield had put it, though what corner he meant she had no idea, and she was out looking for the customary gifts.
She knew, after 5 years, that it was still early to do her “Mass of Christ” shopping but she also knew that it was not a bad idea to start early. The closer the day of Holies approached the more people would be out frantically trying to find a give. While Kory liked Earth and her inhabitants, around this time the year the people began acting less and less like the humans she loved and more and more like deranged Boggelshplects. It some sometimes downright frightening.
Kory already had a good idea of what she would get Gar, Raven and Donnah, but she had no idea what to get Dick. The man was infuriating to shop for. Every year for the past 5 years she had tried a different strategy in gift only to be shot down each and every time. The video games were not to his liking, the clothes not his style, the throwing knives were too close to work and the underwear embarrassing. She was at her wits end. What did boys like Dick like for gifts?! She began to wonder if just showing up naked in his bed would be the right idea.
She worried her bottom lip as she stared into a department store window. Sex was nice but it wasn’t really a gift. She liked to do it with him anyway, giving it as a gift would make it all so cheap. She wanted to give him something special, something that really meant something, but also something he would find practical and use on a daily basis. She liked the idea because then every time he used said item he would think of her and how special he was to her. But finding that perfect gift was proving to be nigh impossible.
Her deep and introspective musings were interrupted by the sound of breaking glass the heavy thud of running feet as a man in a ski mask burst out of a jewelry shop half a block up the street. The man turned in Kori’s direction but was too busy looking over his shoulder to see her as he smacked squarely into her, bowling her over as he ran passed. Kori growled and looked after the thief, her rain coat now thoroughly soaked along with the blouse underneath.
She snarled and took off, literally, after him, scooping him up by the collar of his shirt and lifting him into the air with ease. The man cried out, naturally, as his feet left the ground. “Let me down, hey heeeeey, let me down!” He screamed. Kori gave him a firm shake to shut him up.
“My hair is destroyed, my clothes are soaked, I can’t find a gift for my boyfriend and you have the balls to knock me over without even saying sorry!”
“I’m sorry lady, just let me down!” the would be robber cried as they were now several stories high.
“Thank you” she grunted, throwing the man towards a building. As planned, the back of his coat got caught on a flag pole causing him to hang there like an ornament. “Hang out there for a few hours and see how it helps your manners.” She seemed to have failed to notice that he had just robbed a jewel store.
