Wednesday afternoon, along the east side of the Daily Planet’s windows revealed an overcast covering Metropolis. Surrounded by the three short walls of his cubicle location, Clark Kent sat at his desk, fingers dragging along the touch screen monitor of his computer. On his mind was his current investigation of an unknown alien attack; which also happened to be The Planet’s top story. Shoehorned into writing the article, there were few things Clark hated more than being forced to adulate his alter ego on print. It went against his morals as his desires, wishing to expose the corruption in the city. Instead he had to lie to the world by writing about himself; or rather Superman.
While acting as if he was writing an article, Clark gone over what he knew about the alien; or possibly aliens. Few details came to him, at the moment he could not even communicate and whether it was several aliens or one taking several forms was still unknown. The only thing known was the rampant destruction caused in the wake of Superman’s fights. “Uh-huh. Sure.” Absentmindedly, Clark put the three sets of voices to the back of his mind while his attention focused on his work. Editor Perry White, award winning journalist Lois Lane, and best friend Jimmy Olsen all tried to get a piece of Clark’s attention.
Moments later, Clark came out of his daze and looked up to his screen, seeing his confused expression through the monitor’s reflection. “What just happened?” He asked himself. As usual Perry chewed Clark’s ear off to drop the political piece and focus on the Superman story; after Newspapers were a dying breed and needed to sell stories, not morals. He was to drop Lois off at the airport later on that evening and had lunch plans with Jimmy. On top of it he was sure he would be fighting the alien again sometime between lunch and bed time. Brushing thick fingers through jet black hair, an exasperating sigh flew from his lips, wondering how he got himself in these situations.
--
At a small roadside café just along Main Street named Metropolis Café, Clark met Jimmy. The story as he was told by Jimmy was that pest control was terminating several infestations within the complex and all apartments had to be evacuated for the time being. “Well Jimmy...” Clark started, wanting to say no. Several weeks back, the complex Clark was staying at was destroyed during an attack and while he told friends at the Planet he found a new place but in reality had been staying in The Fortress of Solitude and with Ma back on the farm in Smallville. “I only have a small studio.” Clark felt a twinge of guilt in his stomach, how many lies would he have to tell those in his life. Knowing the answer that the lies would never stop, but there was no choice in the matter, he very well could not tell Jimmy or others about his secret identity.
From behind his own unique glasses that diluted the bright cerulean gaze to a dull, more human color, Clark looked on to the hopeful Jimmy. Unable to turn down the request, perhaps it was about time he got his own place. A sigh escaped his lips as once again Clark gave in to his friends. “Alright... but tomorrow though. I’m dropping Lois off at the airport tonight.” Though he still was unsure why, perhaps he should have paid more attention to her bossy nagging.
Beyond excitement, Jimmy expression his joy in his usual manner. You’re the best CK; you won’t regret this rang in his ears. The usual words by Jimmy whenever Clark agreed to anything Jimmy strongly desired. The celebrations were cut short as Clark began to zone out, or so he appeared to Jimmy. The sound of explosions and screams were heard by Clark as clearly as if he was standing feet away. “CK?” Jimmy asked and soon as he did, he received a text. Looking up from his phone after reading the notice of an attack across town, Jimmy looked to see Clark was nowhere to be seen, just his chair rocking bouncing on its hind legs and change spinning around several bills which was left for the tip.
