Masquerade's History:
Ariadne's father was a decorated Homicide detective in Chicago. Her mother left when she was only a few months old. Her father focused his entire life on her upbringing and was overprotective from the start. He never explained why he was so concerned, other than to say that his job put her at risk. She started her martial arts training at age eight, under the guidance of a close friend of her father's. She also started learning the violin a this time. Her time outside of school was highly structured. She was constantly under the watchful eye of her father's friend when she wasn't with him. She spent a great deal of time with a woman named Lynn Rodgers, who managed a small theater and had been a childhood friend of her father. The theater was her playground when she was young, and she played often on the stage. As she grew older, her father taught her to shoot and take care of guns and shared his love of rock climbing and cross country skiing. They vacationed in Portugal and Spain and she learned Spanish. As a teenager, she was a good student, and often participated in plays at the small theater where she'd played as a child. It was there that she met Arthur Crane. He was fifteen years older than her and captivated by her. He was also part of a large organized crime syndicate in the city. Seventeen at the time, she hid the relationship from her father until she graduated high school. Then she moved out of her father's house and into Arthur's. They wed six months later and Ariadne began taking classes at a Concordia University in Chicago. She registered as a Theater Major, but also engaged in physical education classes. She attended for two year, but didn't go back for her third year because she discovered she was pregnant. Arthur was overjoyed. He encouraged her to renew ties with her father. She tried, eventually revealing to her father that Arthur intended to leave organized crime and the city. A few weeks later,a bomb in his limo exploded and killed Arthur and his driver instantly. Ariadne was walking away from the car and was thrown when the explosion happened. She hit the ground and rolled, losing the child in the process. Her father did not come to see her in the hospital. Lynn Rodgers was there often and came to stay with her when she left the hospital. For a year, she practiced and plotted. She sold all the assets Arthur had left her. She discovered that Arthur had been hiding money away for years. She spent her time gathering information and preparing to avenge her husband and unborn child. Her father's death was her last link to to her old life and she put her plan into action. She re-emerged as Ariadne Crane, stronger and wiser. A short time later, Masquerade appeared, outing her father's former partner whom she knew to be corrupt. In his files, she found information indicating that her mother was still alive. She was left with the name Esmerelda, which she later used as Mask. She turned her focus to finding the men who were responsible for her husband and unborn child's death. Killing when necessary, she moves from city to city, stalking her prey. She eventually tracked the man who made the actual bomb to Gotham City, intending to kill on there. One night she encountered Batman while she was out hunting the man. After some discussion, they came to an agreement that Masquerade could hunt her prey, but wouldn't kill while she was in Gotham. She encountered Batman several times, and developed a certain amount of respect for him. She continued to watch the man she had come to kill, but made no move against him. Instead, she made public appearances as Ariadne and began to collect data on the man she was stalking and those he was dealing with in Gotham.

Part 1 Reverie
What is it about this city that draws one in? At night, from a distance, it appears calm and beautiful with the lights and shadows. But get closer, and you can see into the shadows. You can see the cruelity and the chaos. In the daylight, the city is vibrant. It is a living thing all it's own. There are two worlds here. The first is a world of priviledge and ease, where the shadows seems far away and life is good. The second lies in the darkness, and in that world there is only strife, pain and poverty. I live in both worlds, and I see both clearly.
When I came here, it was to advance my own agenda. I've traveled often to achieve my own ends. But something in this city has changed that for me. Perhaps because I made friends here, and I see now that there are things more important that my personal vendetta. I have traveled across the country to seek out those who wronged me. This is the first time I've stopped to consider helping others
I am a selfish creature, and I own that. What I have done though was truly to avenge an innocent whose life was lost because of the evil that men do to each other. It is a story I have never shared with anyone. But now I have made a start here. The connections are fragile, but I find myself wanting to make them stronger. After so long a time, it seems odd to need a connection. And yet I have to wonder if I have simple made myself like those I seek, cold, cruel..inhuman.
2: Hunting Grounds
Late in the night, I find him. He has come to dispose of something, an opportunity that I can take advantage of. I've left my guns at home. I've promised not to kill in this city. He's on edge, looking around for movement. He's not expecting me though. My kick catches him in the chest and he staggers back. To his credit, he doesn't fall. Nor does he speak. He and I measure each other. He's faster than I give him credit for, dodging my next kick. His hand lashes out and catches my jaw. The strike hurts, but it isn't enough to deter me. He is well trained, I should have remembered.
We are trading blows, and then he catches my foot. I am able to yank free, but the momentum of things have shifted. In any other city, I would be certain of the outcome. Here, I can only strike so deep. My daggers come out. I started this fight, and now I must end it without his death. It's a risk, but I have to punish him. I have feel as if I've accomplished that much. With his next blow, I fall. It's enough to draw him closer. I'm moving slowly, even as he lunges towards me. The dagger in my left hand flashes and finds its spot, cutting deep behind his left knee as I move to avoid the kick from his right leg. He screams, and goes down. I can hear his agony. But instead of feeling power, I feel empty in the midst of victory. And so I leave him, struggling to find the sense of justice I have always felt before.
