Background story
Stephanie Brown is the daughter of the second rate criminal The Cluemaster. During her childhood, Stephanie saw the damage his lifestyle wrought on her family, pushing her mother towards drug abuse, keeping the family broken, troubled and struggling for money. Following one of his many releases from prison, during which he claimed once again to be going straight, Stephanie discovered he had abandoned his ways only in respect of his compulsion to leave clues, she finally resolved to save her mother and herself from his malignant influence and adopted the persona of Spoiler to leave clues to his crimes instead.
A friendship with Robin (Tim Drake) developed and led to a grudging acceptance within the Bat family. Ultimately Stephanie’s acceptance led to a brief tenure as the first female Robin. A position from which Stephanie was fired leading to resumption of the Spoiler persona. Determined to restore Batman’s faith in her Stephanie tried to enact one of his plans to deal with the organized crime in Gotham, excluded from details, she misunderstood leading to a city wide gang war, the death of Orpheus and her own capture, torture and apparent murder at the hands of Black Mask.
Stephanie however was not killed, her death faked by Dr Leslie Tompkins to try to shock Batman into changing his ways in what Tompkins felt was the needless endangerment of others, Stephanie was taken to Africa where she recovered and helped in aid missions before resuming vigilante activities against a local Witch Hunter.
Discovering she could not leave behind the desire to help, to make things right, she returned to Gotham and became the Spoiler once more, before finally assuming the identity of Batgirl when it was relinquished by Cassandra Cain.
Description
Appearance: As Spoiler, Stephanie wears a purple body suit, with black gloves, boots, and utility belt. Her face is covered with a black mask, and the costume is completed with a purple hood and cape. Her costume was homemade and stocked with purchases from Radio Hut and is both rudimentary and of limited protective value.
Personality: Stephanie Brown is kind and thoughtful, with a strong sense of justice and right, very giving and affectionate, but these are all undercut with feelings of self-doubt, uncertainty and a sometimes closed nature. she struggles rather too regularly with feelings of isolation and inadequacy.
Spoiler is therefore a somewhat conflicted character, trying very hard to be the hero she wants to be but always doubting herself. It is not until her acceptance as Batgirl, that some amount of belief begins to grow.

She heard the familiar flutter, the zip, the crash, she turned her head, tilting, trying to place the sounds, it was HIM, it had to be, she yearned to follow and then there was the small voice inside “Don’t go! He doesn’t need you. He doesn’t want you.” Quieter sounds of a struggle, muffled, over there, the apartments, two horses outside? Why two horses? “Is it him? Or a hallowe’en party” Another scream. It didn’t sound like fun and games, she felt herself tense. “Go to him” “He doesn’t need you”. There was the broken window, movement inside, dark figures, anger, the sounds of pain. ”Oh shut up Steph and do some good.”
Running along the edge of the roof she took out her grapple and using her momentum also swung it towards the apartment building, it landed, caught, gripped just as she reached the edge and propelled herself in a parabolic arc bringing her across the gap between the two buildings almost parallel to the apartments and at a safe enough angle to catch the fire escape a couple of windows away from the broken one, inside she heard the sounds of fists meeting flesh. “He doesn’t need you Steph, he’s dealing with them”. She paused a second, she needed to see, needed to see how things should be done, she slipped quietly to the ledge, flat against the wall “We’re getting on better now gravity, lets stay friends shall we?”
Peering around the window past the slivers of glass she saw a scene that made no sense a spider had HIM pinned, and a Mummy? This! Wasn’t happening! She pulled back a moment. THAT couldn’t be happening. She looked around again… big guys, big brawny guys, too big, too heavy, big enough to hold HIM. She pulled back again and this time reached into her belt. When she moved it was just as the smoke capsules exploded, the flash, the smoke, the confusion, her foot in the back of the Mummy’s knee, her fist in his kidneys as he started to topple. This couldn’t be real.
Something else in the air, she couldn’t quite place it, the mummy hadn’t gone down, tough guy… or desperate… and then he was screaming and rocketing past her out of the window. The arachnid was on its back, legs waving, big, hairy, gross… but at least Batman was up, she didn’t remember him being 12 feet tall, and such fiery eyes, oh hell, was this another of those nightmares? “Hey Bats” she called out as lightly as she could towards the burning eyes in a black silhouette almost as if the fire shone right through him. ‘He doesn’t need you Steph... get out of his way and then it’s just a fluke we got in each other’s paths and we’ll go our separate ways at that’ll be that’
.....
Her lungs hurt, the flames, spreading far faster than she’d thought, the heat in the air making it difficult to breathe, burning inside… she looked away from him, didn’t want to face his gaze. Flames everywhere, the whole room red and orange and dancing in the constantly changing light, every single thing alive with movement and heat… the fire twisting like serpents around… a child… like a punch to her stomach... a child, she twisted away from the Batman, “Let him deal with them… HE doesn’t need me anyway. Oh God don’t be too late!” The child’s tiny clothes already on fire she reached into the flames, even through the gauntlets SO HOT. She clasped a small leg, pulled, ‘Oh god the smell’... his hair melting away, she pulled him close rolled him, smothered, but the smell… the red and the black and the smell… ‘Too late Steph, always too late’, she slumped to the floor, pulled his body close, tears in her eyes, beyond just the smoke, she pulled him into her lap, beginning to rock.

Significant Relationships
Arthur Brown - The Cluemaster | Crystal Brown | Timothy Drake - Red Robin | Cassandra Cain - Batgirl |
Stephanie's despised father. A failed TV Gameshow host, the loss of the high life and the seething resentment that followed resulted in the creation of the abusive environment in her home which led to her mother's drug dependency and Stephanie's determination to put things right. | Crystal's parents told her Arthur was beneath her. But she knew better, Arthur was going places, he was going to be a star, a bright shining Star! When he lost that, his frustration was taken out on his family, Crystal lost her spark, her looks, her will, crawling into a pill bottle and far away from Arthur... and Stephanie. | Beyond all the mistakes, the pain, the confusion, the hurt and the loss, it's always Tim. First encountering Red Robin while attempting to prevent one of her father's most apalling crimes, an attraction developed rapidly, though she never felt worthy of him. | In Cassandra, Stephanie has found a surrogate sister, someone to whom she can aspire, but whom she can also help.It is doubtful Cassandra regards Stephanie's skills as even adequate, but she seems to respect Stephanie's tencacity and strength of will. |
Bruce Wayne - Batman | Dinah Lance - Black Canary | Barbara Gordon - Oracle | Helena Wayne - Huntress |
Stephanie replaced her own despised father with the Batman, as the man she most wanted to please, to gain his approval. A task which seemed impossible, no matter how hard she tried. | One of the first of the heroes to accept Stephanie, to credit and encourage Stephanie, and to agree to train her. | Oracle did not approve, she considered Stephanie a liablity, and likely to get herself killed. Her opinion changed when Stephanie adopted the mantle of Batgirl and Barbara came to appreciate her strengths. | A difficult relationship, Helena and Stephanie's lack of acceptance within the Bat Family drew them together, though Stephanie was disturbed by Helena's anger and violence. |
Selina Kyle - Catwoman | Damian Wayne - Robin V | Edward Nigma - The Riddler | Roman Sionis - Black Mask |
Selina's attitude to Stephanie was complex as befitted such a complex personality, at some times she seemed amused, at others irritated by Stephanie's naivite, at others worried for her safety. | Child minding League of Assassin's Devilspawn was not Stephanie's idea of her place in the Bat Family... and yet her heart broke a little at his all too familiar desperation to please. | Arthur Brown's sometime partner, superior and mocking of all the Brown family. | The point at which things went too wrong. |
Titus Czonka - The Baffler | Lester Buckinsky - Electrocutioner | Kristin Ling - Lynx II | |
One of Arthur Brown's gang, slow witted and clumsy, more of a liability than an asset. | A loose cannon on Cluemaster's team, and a deadly one | Evidence of the shades of grey in Gotham, and that no one is exactly as they appear, an 'enemy' who proves to be an ally |
