It was strange to see the familiar and the unfamiliar smashed together, pillars and temples so akin to home crammed between the buildings of men, yellowed or blackened by the filth in the air that hung like a fog, the temples all tumbled down and broken, the way men broke everything. There was the feeling of a moistness in her eyes as Eleni Leikos, the Greek Diplomat who had been assigned to take her on a tour of Greece, to show her what had it had become since it and Themyscira had become so separated.
It had almost been easier leaving Themyscira for America, almost simpler to leave home for the alienness of the men’s world, to find something that looked sounded and smelled so different, so alien, The savagery of the concrete and glass that cut into the green without sympathy or conscience… without grace. The buildings reaching into the sky like black daggers where the machines screamed and tore at the glowering sky. Beneath.. the crush of the people, rolling like a tidal wave of humanity beneath the leaden skies, choking in the fumes of the roaring machines that rumbled so that the earth, the very air around them trembled. She could smell it, she could taste it. The World that Men had Built.
Had mother been right to deny her? To try to save her from the world of men, the world that hate had built? She had needed to see, perhaps she was the only one that could… that could weep for this world of spikes in the tattered earth and still forgive. It had been easier in America, to see the land all but severed from the past, she had rushed at the chance to see Greece, a land she never knew yet still a homecoming to whence all her people had sprung, and here the pain was greater so see the echoes of home amidst the soulless machines and crushing grey monoliths of progress and choking in its bad breath.
Eleni had been almost proud at showing the Amazon around. Diana had forced herself to smile, yes it was emotional to return home, yes the Parthenon was beautiful lit against the night sky. Yet the ravaging of its beauty pulled at her and she had shut her eyes against it, grateful to be whisked away from the city in Leikos' car to their next destination, Cephalonia, a picturesque village on a cape by the Greek isles. The air still stank, but cutting through it was the smell of the sea as she wound down the window to try to breathe again, Cephalonia, it didn’t make her want to weep so hard. And from what Leikos had told Diana it was a quiet little town. That sounded more tolerable. ”Thank you, Eleni” she said unlocking the door and stepping out almost before the car had completely stopped.
She stretched as she stepped into the sunlight, cramped in the small car. Even incognito she struck a striking figure, more than 6 feet tall, even without her low heels, her long dark hair stark against her pale skin and the long flowing white summer dress she wore. Diana followed Eleni down the hill towards the blue water lapping the shore between the white buildings, almost as if the country had dared to open its lips a sliver to breathe, smiling as she watched the children play in the street. Some kind of tag like game.
One of the children was running blindly, looking back at his friends who pursued him, and ran right into her leg! Tumbling away against her firmness and strength. The shocked boy never even hit the street as with her quick reflexes and swiftness was able catch him before him before the tears could form. A smile dimpled the Amazon's cheeks as she looked at the wide eyed child. "Did they almost catch you little one?” She asked him before looking up at the crude chalk circles drawn on the street, the group of children looking at her surprised and confused at what they had seen, hands on their hips.
The boy gasped in wonder at beautiful woman who held him, blushing a bit. Blurting out a quick "Thank you, ma'am." In modern Greek. Catching the woman speaking English, he switched to it to answer her. "No" his small chest puffed out like a Robin's "I am too fast for them!" Diana smiled at the little boy, his voice light, like birdsong. His version of the Greek language similar to that of the Amazons', yet new, childish, like the people. As she set him down he at once turned and ran back to his friends, eager to give the game another go. Her fingers trailing from his shoulder as he left. Even though she was unsure how her ancient words would sound to these children she called out in her Greek. "Fly like Hermes little one!"
