The elder woman looked over her shoulder at Diana, who continued: "We need to talk."
The words themselves were innocuous; they seemed so simple. Talk. They'd talked millions of times in their lives, about important things and unimportant things alike. They've spoken of Gods, and monsters, and men, but never had Diana had that look on her face. Hera help her, that look melted Hippolyta's heart.
At first she had been furious that her child had gone to fight Ares, but as the younger Amazon spoke about her battle, how well she fought, and what she learned, her anger shifted. How long has held hatred in her heart for the God of War? She felt her body go cold, her face becoming numb as the Queen struggled to keep her face impassive. Her mouth twitched downward and her blue eyes closed, not wanting to see the expression of pity Diana's face had.
"Thank you, my child," she said, her dark head nodding, black curls falling over her bare shoulders as she gripped the marble rail of her balcony. "I think I need a moment."
Mother and child embraced and the Queen once again turned her eyes over the horizon, watching the shimmering gold and vibrant orange of the sunset spread across the sky. When she heard the soft, dull thud of the heavy door closing, the twitching her the Queen's mouth returned, slowly moving through her body. Her hand, which had been gripping the railing tight, clenched harder into a fist, pushing through the stone as if it was stale bread, shattering the rock. Her breathing became irregular and she felt something rising from within.
As she sunk to the ground, a sorrowful, mournful wail, akin to that of a woman at the feet of an executed husband, rose from her throat, echoing off the terrace around her, frightening the birds who had been seated peacefully in the garden below, and while all on the island could hear their Queen, feel the terrible sorrow in her cries, none dared enter. After hours of body wracking sobs the Queen was exhausted, spent, still crouched on the floor where she had sunk after hearing the news. Her dark head lifted, eyes turning now to the black sky sprinkled with diamond like pin points of light, eyes red and swollen.
"I'm so sorry, M'Lord," she prayed, for the first time in a thousand years. "I'm so very, very sorry my Love..."
