Being fussed over wasn't something Mercy enjoyed, and the fact that the fluttering stylists and make up people fluffing her hair and applying this and that to her skin were interfering with business just made matters worse. The blonde had been selected by Metropolis Life magazine as the most influential persons of the year, and as such a cover spread and a photoshoot was required. What was supposed to take ten minutes and a trip to Luthor Castle was turning into an entire day spent wrangling moronic journalists at the estate. She only tolerated it due to the McKellan in her left hand and her phone in her right. She was checking stocks and answering emails while letting the whiskey take the edge off the fact strangers were touching her.
She sighed, finally pushing away one of the stylists as the Blackberry in her hand rang. It was Charles, head of LexCorp's security department. He never called her unless it was something really important. "Yes?" Mercy snapped into the receiver as she pushed her way off the chair and walked past the fluttering artistics, her heels clicking on the hardwood, taking long strides towards the balcony which looked out over the estate.
"He's back." Two simple words, and her life was going to change.
"I see," she replied, taking in a deep breath, feeling her chest expand under the Armani suit, the air filled with lilacs from the garden below. "Where is he?"
"He's in his office."
"-MY- office," she corrected Charles, her mouth turning to a thin line as her hazel eyes narrowed. "He's still technically dead - he owns nothing but the dirt we planted that empty casket under."
Her pulse thudded in her veins as she hung up the phone, shifting her weight from her right to left leg, surveying the land. Things were going to be different now that Lex had come back. Firstly, she'd have to call the lawyers and have the legal death certificate revoked, then there was the matter of the company. Surely he'd want that back, no? And the properties. The homes. Planes. Cars. Diamonds. Luxuries Mercy had grown all too accustomed to and that were, as per his will, entirely her property.
So the King had returned, she thought to herself. Too bad the Queen had no intention of stepping down. She brought the glass to her lips and took a sip, feeling the burn as it traveled down her throat.
"Let the games begin."
