Character Origin: (Comic/Movie/TVshow/Mixed? If mixed, state what combinations you're using.)
Videogame inspired and then comic to adapt it to DCU.
Name: Jessica Skyes.
Alias: Mostly Jess. Predator, occasionally.
Race: Human.
Age: 30.
Birthday: November, 22.
Alignment: Lawful good.
Height: 5’8’’, 173cm.
Weight: 59 kg, 130lb.
Hair: Brown.
Eyes: Blue.
Physique: Medium frame, firm and toned during all the years that she has served so far in the military, not particularly or otherwise not visibly or very obviously muscular.
Training: Her current rank is Captain. Strongly influenced by military training, her own include several martial arts, among them are: jiu jitsu, kung fu, muay thai, judo, karate and many others.
Nanosuit program: Jessica proved that only the most strategically and tactically savvy, the most astute, the swiftest, most determined and specially the candidates like her with the most adaptability, to all possible events and scenarios during a mission, could manage to show outstanding results in the tests and simulations. She also proved that the sex and the strength of the candidates were irrelevant.
Equipment: She has access to military equipment, including assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, submachine guns, precision rifles, miniguns, gauss rifles, explosives, grenade launchers, C4, mines, different types of grenades and, on the right event, even experimental weapons such as:
- TAC launcher: It is a hand-held prototype that fires a small nuclear bomb like a homing missile. It requires 3 seconds to lock on target.
- PAX cannon: Plasma accumulator cannon. Short range, instant muzzle speed, highly accurate. Good for short range combat against armored targets. It requires 2 seconds to recharge.
She can also customize the scopes or reflex sight, the use or not of a silencer, laser pointer or flashlight modules and use tactical, which fires darts that knock out enemy units for 60 seconds, or grenade launcher attachments in the SCAR tactical assault rifle. In other weapons she is able to use normal or incendiary ammunition.
Nanosuit 1.0. A good quick introduction is this video and this other video where you can see the cloak mode briefly. Here is also the much longer wiki: Wiki link, long version.
The nanosuit was co-developed by Star Labs, Ray Palmer, under the most extreme secrecy for the government of the United States, including the military program for the ideal candidates, of which Jess was one of the first ones.
It is a full body suit that uses and regenerates its energy. If energy is used it takes the suit 1 second to start regenerating it. If it is depleted, it takes 9 seconds to fully regenerate all energy.
The suit has 4 modes which can be switched by the user from one to another instantly.
- Armor mode: Which is the default mode. Uses energy to absorb damage, including fall damage, explosions and extreme environmental damage. It requires constant punishment to actually damage the user as the suit will regenerate its energy as stated above. No energy equals to no armor. This mode also heals the user at an extremely quick rate, while still recharging energy, if no damage is being taken.
- Cloak mode: Jess’s favorite and the cause of one of her nicknames. It renders the user invisible, visually and to sensors. While activated if the user does not move, excluding turning or looking around, it lasts exactly 3 minutes until energy is depleted. Walking dramatically shortens the duration to 10 seconds. Running to 7 seconds. It depletes completely if the user attacks. Jess works around this limitation by first cloaking, then getting into position and then quickly deactivating cloak mode to shoot before activating cloak mode again, all in a second. Cloak mode can still be seen if the enemy unit is way too close as it has a very slight visual distortion.
- Speed mode: It increases speed and agility of the user. It does not consume energy unless the user sprints. If spring, energy is depleted after 2 seconds.
- Strength mode: It increases strength of the user. By default it severely reduces recoil and it mitigates falling damage, although armor mode also mitigates it too, albeit differently. It also allows the user to jump higher than a normal human could and helps with difficult terrain. Energy allows for 4 consecutive jumps before being depleted.
The nanosuit has other functions:
- Visor, which includes a binoculars function that can highlight enemy units, vehicles and ammunition, using satellites too to help track their posterior movements, making it easier to create tactics against them, it also magnifies distant sound which is useful for gathering information or hearing footsteps to help pinpoint locations and highlight the enemies.
- It also allows the user to breathe underwater for 60 seconds before energy is very quickly depleted and the user is forced to go up, after that it is ready again.
- Night vision, which lasts for about 60 before it needs to recharge for about 12 seconds.
- The nanosuit has its own communication system too and it accesses a military network for diverse uses, such as topographic maps, objectives, radar, etc and also display critical information on its HUD.
- Because the nanosuit is derived from extraterrestrial technology of unspecified origin, it might be able to interact in some way with said original technology if the two ever made contact.
Powers / Abilities
- Predatory instincts: Jess has an innate stealth approach to situations, she can finish a mission with the enemy knowing that they are being attacked but having no idea as to where she is exactly while she eliminates enemy units and vehicles or gets to the objective safely, depending on the mission. She likes to lure enemies into thinking that she is somewhere she is not, reposition and then highlight and eliminate some of them, reposition and repeat until the area is clear.
- Leadership, master tactician and strategist: While she obeys orders too she is known to find creative solutions to the usual direct objectives that she is given to, forming a strategy and tactics to accomplish each mission.
- Charismatic: Not just her beauty, her presence can be somewhat intimidating, she is direct but others obey her command for duty and because they believe in her competence too.
- Sharpshooter: Apart from her tactics and instincts, she is very skilled with most firearms and has a very precise aim. She shows no clear preference for weapons, as she will use the weapons that she seems more appropriate for each different type of enemy and situation.
- Close combat: While it is not her favored option, sometimes silencers or firearms are not available and she can use deadly force in hand to hand combat. She is also able to put a knife to very good use too.
- Pilot: She is a very competent air pilot, both with jets and VTOL, but she can also pilot other vehicles, such as main battle tanks and boats if required.
Weaknesses
- Energy: As stated above, the nanosuit has energy limitations, some of them can be toyed around with, and others require the user to properly manage energy levels or risk disaster due to bad timing.
- Anti nanosuit weaponry: The nanosuit is vulnerable to nano disruptors or electro-magnetic pulse grenades. They deny the use of the suit’s modes, HUD and radar for 10 seconds.
- She is normal: Despite the nanosuit and its capacities, Jess is human and lacks anything special, at least superpower related.
- There is no sport in it: This basically means that if an enemy unit cannot be considered dangerous by Jess, she will not attack the enemy with lethal force, lethal being the key word.
Relationships
- Kate Akin: She is Jess’s usual link with the command branch outside and during missions, except for when Jess receives superior orders. The two work very well together despite Jess switching priorities and going off mission if the situation requires it in Jess’s opinion, which has happened once so far. Kate has a reputation for being simply scary to contradict.
- Hawk Team: Jess’s current assigned team, all of its five members wear nanosuits. Their chemistry is very good while on duty and outside of it. She leads them while on the field.
- Ray Palmer: She met him twice, she is not sure as to what to think of the man other than suspecting that he has a secret agenda even though she does not know which kind it is yet at all.
- Amanda Waller: The two do not know each other in person but Amanda might have become aware of the nanosuit program after the leak and could have firm intentions of using it against the ever growing “problem” of superhero presence in the world.

Fragment of the transmissions of Hawk team leader Jessica Skyes. (Mar, 2, 2014, 0:32:22).
Kate Akin: “Jess. We got the hostage out safely, and your friends are heading back into the field. Any news on the main target?”
Jessica Skyes: “They have locked themselves up around the area of the mine.”
Kate Akin: “Makes sense, massive enemy build up in that area. Whatever they’re hiding up there, they sure don’t want us getting close.”
[…]
VTOL pilot: “Predator, this is Vulture one-three approaching the LZ. Stand by for extraction. Over.”
Jessica Skyes: “The LZ’s still hot. Repeat: LZ is hot.”
VTOL pilot: “We can’t land until that area’s secure. Predator, clear ‘em out.”
Jessica Skyes: “I’m on it, Vulture.”
[…]
Jessica Skyes: “Kate, you copy? I think these guys have nano-suits!”
Kate Akin: “I’ll be damned, they aren’t supposed to have that technology yet.”
Jessica Skyes: “If it’s any consolation two are down, two more to go.”
VTOL pilot: “Predator, we’re still see movement down there.”
Jessica Skyes: “I’m working on it! […] Vulture this is Predator, area seems clear.”
VTOL pilot: “Copy, Predator. Stand by, I’m bringing her down.”
(2015, second encounter with Ray Palmer.)
“Thanks for the investigation by the way, much appreciated, remind me to never work with the military again” said Ray to Jess at Star labs, fairly late in the evening. The two were alone and Jess stood a few meters apart from him.
“Oh please, save the excuses for others, did you really expect otherwise? If I had not asked for it another officer close to the project would have done the same, maybe just not as quickly. Why did you start working on the project?” she asked him.
“I didn’t want to at first, until they showed me what they had recovered a century ago, then I had to crack it open and solve the puzzle, it was very advanced technology after all” he replied, to which Jess rolled her eyes but then she tilted her head a bit to a side and approached him, whom was still sitting down.
“Yeah, very advanced, did you know that when you calibrate the suit it can get a bit tight? As if it chokes you, but worse” she said with a slight pause, her tone somewhat intimidating. “Until the suit compensates, the pain is unbearable. Then there is the gap between the skin and the suit, too close and it can irritate the skin, too far and it starts to tear the skin from your flesh.” She explained, to which Ray probably gulped, it was not that he was easily intimidated, but her presence had always been considerable.
“What exactly do you want, Captain?” he finally asked when Jess placed both hands on his desk.
“I want this mystery solved, how could such an extremely secret project be copied by the enemies of our country and not just how, but when and who exactly did and ordered it. And if you, as you said are too busy to be bothered with this, then point me to someone that can actually help” She replied. Ray paused a moment and then he seemed to get an idea as to who to direct Jess to.
