On a clear, full moon night over Coast City, the Green Lantern Harold “Hal” Jordan flew at skyscraper altitudes. He was patrolling /his/ city. He would establish his patrols over vulnerable areas - stores set in bad neighborhoods, highways with a reputation for accidents and industrial areas - to give himself the most response time to interrupt whatever act that was in progress. He had been making an impact on crime by way of these efficient patrol routes.
The sounds cars driving, people talking and the occasional airliner were interrupted by an explosion at the Ace Chemicals plant. “Some people never learn from the mistakes of others.” Green Lantern thought to himself. He made a dash for the Coast City branch of Ace Chemicals - one of the more advanced facilities in the company.
As the smoke from the explosion cleared, two men in black jumpsuits approached the gaping hole outside the building. The wall had been breached and the lab inside was exposed. “Damnit! What did you do that for!” A slender, mouse-like man in a fedora growled out at his minion, a tall, brutish man with a face full a stubble. “Freakin Green Lantern’s going to show up any moment now!” the Mousy Man said with a slap to the brute’s face. A third man ran around the corner and approached the two. “What is wrong with you two? Can’t you disable a security system without an explosion!?”
“That’s what I’m saying! Marty set the security off!” the Mousy Man growled.
“We don’t got time for this!” The third man growled. “Grab the chemicals and go!”
Marty stepped into the lab first, followed by the cohorts. “This is it…” the third man said. A case labeled strychnodide.”Grab that one!” the third man growled out. Marty grabbed the case. Two security guards came around the corner. “Hands up!” They yelled as they raised their own guns. The Mousy Man was quick to react, pulling his own gun out and dropping to the ground to shrink the target size the Security had to work with. He quickly squeezed off two rounds, hitting one of the guards in the leg and chest. The remaining Guard withdrew, dragging the wounded guard with him. Green Lantern landed on the ground, in view of both the wounded and the criminals.
“Green Lantern!” the Mousy Man growled out while the Guards cheered.
“Back off Lantern! We wounded that guard. You gotta choose between saving him or stopping us, don’t you?”
“I don’t think you understand how this works.” Green Lantern said. “When I show up, it stops being your show and becomes my show.” He pointed to the Mousy Man, then back at himself.
Marty wasn’t impressed. He might not have been smart enough to be. He attempted to bull rush the glowing green man with superpowers.
“Sure, you get one free punch.” Green Lantern sighed.
Marty punched Green Lantern’s forcefield straight in the jaw, instantly breaking his own wrist. Marty, who had been entirely stone faced this time, gripped his wrist and began crying in pain.
“Last week I got punched by an alien who could bench press three tons, you think you stood a chance?”
“Green Lantern. You gotta save my pal here!” The healthy guard yelled.
“Yeah, yeah.” Green Lantern nodded. He took aim at the criminals. His ring lit up a bright green and out shot three beams at them, wrapping them up.
“Oh come on!” The third man yelled out. “This isn’t fair!”
“Don’t cry to me now. If you wanted ‘fair’ you would have chosen an honest job.” Green Lantern said with a smirk. A fourth beam reached out of the ring to relieve the men of their respective firearms and deliver them to the remaining security guard. “Keep these three clowns pinned down until I get back or the police arrive. I’ll take this fellow to the hospital.” He said to the guard as a green stretcher began to render under the wounded guard.
Green Lantern lifted off the ground, dragging the stretcher through the air with him. As the distance between he and the chemical plant grew, he could hear and eventually see police cars with blazing sirens already en route. “Mission accomplished.”
