The Justice League Mini-series Story #5:
The Witch's Mirror #1
Batman: Gateway City, Boston, City Park. The summer air was stale and smelling of rotten beacon, cooked flesh that had sat for an indescribable amount of time. The detectives examined the corpse and raised an eye brow.- “Jesus, what the hell happened to her?” –The detectives leaned down and looked at the corpse.- “Some kind of…Spartan armor or something…You know from Lord of the Rings or something?” “I don’t watch movies…Let’s see if she’s got any ID…” –They reached down with gloved hands and found no signs of anything, her golden helmet was from ancient Greece, red feathers coating the very top of the armor on a fin, finely placed together.- <c>
Batman: “I don’t believe it, this armor is…almost 100% authentic in its making.” –The men grabbed the sword and examined it.- “Hey, you notice something else about her body?” “What’s that?” “I know you’re small guy compared to your wife but…This lady towers over Melissa any day…She’s what would you say; 6, maybe 6’2” in height? Weighed probably 140 150?” –The Detectives would nod.- “She’s one hell of a woman…” “Christ, she’s an amazon.”–One detective lifted the amazons skirt armor to see her underwear.- “Hmm…No sign of rape or struggle. What the hell happened to her?“ <c>
Batman: –The amazon’s body was that of Themyscira, her outfit was that of a messenger except her satchel had gone missing and the detectives didn’t know any better. Her body was drained of its bodily fluids; she was nothing but skin and bones, with some muscles hanging off her exposed flesh. She had recently died within the past 2 hours.<C>
Batman: -Gotham City, 30 minutes later…The thug ran across the street quickly, rushing through the alleyway, his satchel bobbing side to side on him, he stopped swiftly as a truck blown out its horn towards him. He swallowed his heart that jumped into his throat. He began running towards another alley when suddenly a large shadow over casts him and suddenly Batman landed on the man glide kicking him into a dumpster the satchel…*SNAP!* and collapsed onto the floor making a loud clank.- The thug cowered and quickly began running away, when suddenly a Bola device wrapped around the thugs legs causing him to trip and smash into the ground. Batman glared at the man, before grabbing the satchel to see a rod. <c>
Batman: -The rod was gold with green opals etched into it in long diamond shapes. It appeared like a scepter of some kind. Batman would begin walking towards the thug. – “This is the third artifact like this I’ve seen in the past week…What makes these so special?” –The man groaned and Batman stomped his foot against the thugs face pressing him against the alley concrete.- “Please, don’t talk…if you’re done eating solid food…” “Alright! Alright! It’s-…” –Suddenly the thug turned into a pig. Batman took a step back.- “What the?” –Batman looked around narrowing his eyes, he looked at the pig run away, Batman pursued the pig when it was immediately smashed by a truck, <c>
Batman: a horn roaring through the city streets as blood splattered all over the side walk and street. Batman narrowed his eyes and then looked to the gold rod, it would glow lightly offering Batman a warm feeling, and he waited a moment before spotting a dark haired woman wearing a business suit standing in front of Boston University, surrounded by young adults. Batman narrowed his eyes at the image before it suddenly disappeared. Batman placed his hand against his helmet.- “Ace, prepare the jet, I’m going to Boston…”
Wonder Woman: Doctor Diana Prince had taken up residence in Gateway City as a professor at Boston University. No one had any inkling that she might be the mysterious Amazon who had been spotted saving the unsuspecting victims throughout the city, the Princess of Themyscira. Diana was a common enough name. She had taken a page from Clark Kent's disguise book; always wearing her dark hair in a bun and wearing glasses, speaking with a meek voice and feigning a shy demeanour had everyone fooled. Long sleeves, even in the height of summer, kept her bracers hidden, for she never left without them. A reminder of her power and her limitations. She spoke to her students after class, speaking this week on the women of Sparta. "But weren't all women in Ancient Greece thought of as chattel?"
Wonder Woman: Diana shook her head, thinking how did this girl really think things were any different now than then. "No," she said with a soft smile. "While Gorgo and Helen are most often remembered for being movie characters, they were both very strong women, a queen and a princess, of Sparta herself. The line from that movie "Because Spartan women give birth to real men," was actually attributed to Gorgo, who was often questioned regarding her participation in politics of her father and her husband." She wore a dark blue pencil skirt and a white, long sleeve blouse, her jacket folded over her arm. She looked casual, calm and confident, but nothing like the righteous Amazon on the cover of the student paper ; she didn't think of herself as hiding, so much as blending in. <c>
Wonder Woman: She was, after all, behind enemy lines. <e>
Batman: -A dean would begin approaching Diana alongside a tall dark haired man wearing a business suit.- “Excuse me, Professor Diana? This man would like to speak with you. If you have a moment.” –Bruce Wayne stood next to Dean Shaw, the elderly looking woman wore her red short sleeve blouse with her business dress. Bruce was wearing dress pants with a short sleeved white business shirt and a bright pink tie. Bruce smiled as his eyes were covered by a pair of sunglasses to block out the setting sun.-
Wonder Woman: She smiled a wide smile at Bruce, tilting her head to the side. "Mister Wayne," she extended her right hand, brushing a piece of hair from her eyes with her left. "Whatever has brought you from Gotham to Gateway?" she asked. They had never "interacted" but Bruce had been a big help in setting up the identity of Diana Prince and in getting her the job with the university, just as much as Clark had, even if she had never been in a social situation with the dapper businessman, or had even met him face to face outside of his mask. He was handsome; she knew that from the newspapers and constant television activities, which she did not approve of, but never the less she realized how important the misdirection was. Still... "It must be very important to pull yourself away fro
Wonder Woman: Gotham to the drudgery of academia." <e>
Batman: -Bruce smiled at her and shook her hands. – “I’ve read some of your lectures…You’re very much an advocate for women’s rights. Not that I think it’s unnecessary, but I think some take it to extremes…” –Bruce looked to the Dean and smiled.- “Thank you for your help.” –She smiled and began walking away; Bruce looked to Diana’s students before looking back at her. He crossed his arms and said.- “You’re an expert or professor in what *exactly* Diana?” –Bruce gestured to the cement path way leading to the university front statue. Bruce’s blue eyes examined her, showing signs of boldness and fearlessness.-
Wonder Woman: "Extremes to the oppressor might not look the same from the side of the oppressed, Mister Wayne," she spoke with a seldom heard defiance in her voice. Her students looked between the two; while they might make a striking couple, both tall, statuesque, dark hair and blue eyes, it seemed the personalities were opposed. "Doctor Prince," she corrected him as she remained relaxed in her posture, squaring only her shoulders. "I am a doctor in ancient Greek history, with a masters in anthropology. And what, exactly, are you an expert in? Aside from being in the tabloid spot lights with an ever changing, endless train of young women?" She quirked an eyebrow over the rim of her dark rimmed, oval shaped glasses. "Did you come here with a purpose? Or are you just here to recruit Freshmen to your fantasies?"
Batman: -He listened to her tone and was taken back some by her. He would grow a bit in frustration and say.- “Oh, of course, because that’s when men do…We prey on young women who are utterly defenseless and can’t make their own choice. Or wait are you a college liberal type who don’t like me because I’m a business man? Looks like I’m screwed either way with you…And for the record, that wasn’t a sexual advance on you, I meant, there’s no way to make you happy. Just in case you decide to file sexual harassment against me and have me marked as a sex offender…” –He sighed.- “Look, the reason I’m here is because of this...” <c>
Batman: –Bruce reached into his jacket and held out a photo of an ancient tablet showing a rod held by a group of tan skinned people presenting the rod to a pillow with a white striped feline looking tail above it. The photo would seem cut off from the full picture.- “That rod…Do you know anything about it? Any sort of…hallucinations or…anything like that?”
Wonder Woman: She smiled coyly as he got defensive and shook her head. "Only men who have something to hide have reason to fear the truth," she said. As he took out the photo she blinked, trying not to act to surprised. She nodded. "Yes, but I think this is better discussed in my office, Mister Wayne," she said, taking the picture from him and leading the way into the building. "Are you always so defensive?" She smiled over her shoulder. She led them into her office and shut the door. "Clark taught me how to use a computer, you know," she said. "You could have just emailed me the image. It's a ceremonial staff from an offshoot cult, it was used by one of their priestesses to invoke "visions."" She handed him back the photo. "How do you know about it?" <C>
Wonder Woman: No need to hide; they were both heroes and he knew her secret as she knew his. She was more confident in private, more herself. <E>
Batman: “I found it in Gotham, a thug was carrying it in a bag…Say, you said it’s a ceremonial staff. Is there any chance there’s more than one? Maybe a set of them? Anyway, the rod…or…staff sent me an image of you. Practically telling me where you were. But the strangest thing happened,” –Bruce leaned over the desk to look into her face, un-intimidated by her and with a flirtation smirk before going sober and saying.- “The man carrying was about to tell me all about it and suddenly he became a pig and ran off. Before I could catch him he was struck by a truck and splattered across the street. Which also lead you to be my only-…”<c>
Batman: –Three knocks would occur at the door and two figures stood outside the blurry glass window. Bruce looked at his watch and stood up straight stepping in front of Diana’s desk.- “A little late for guests, expecting someone?” -Bruce seemed ready for combat as his posture was that of strength with his shoulders straight and chest puffed forward. And balled his fists.-
Wonder Woman: "No, I'm not," she said with a cautious tone. She was painfully aware of his posture, even if he seemed to be unconscious of it. She didn't need his protection, and if this involved who she thought it might he was in fact the one who needed her protection. She shifted her weight and the one figure knocked again. "Doctor Prince?" The voice called from the outside as Diana squared her shoulders and went forward to answer, twisting the knob with one hand, her other hand ready to deflect an attack.
Batman: “Detective Allen Bogart, this is Detective Mcafferty…” –The two detectives were shorter than Diana only by a couple of inches. They looked at Bruce as Bruce stepped up behind Diana.- “Oh, sorry for intruding on you and your boyfriend Doctor, but we have a few questions to ask you, very important.” –The detectives walked into the room and placed a rag on her desk, unfolding the rag she would see a Themyscira short sword.- “We’ve sent pictures of this to the world leading expert and historian on Ancient societies dating during the Roman, Greek, and medieval era, whatever you guys do…His immediate reply is that this was a fake and because the symbols on it aren’t seen or referenced in any other literature currently known.” <c>
Batman: -Bruce looked at it and didn’t seem to infer anything as he looked at it with no reaction.-
Wonder Woman: She hid the horror at the sight of the sword as it was laid out on her desk. She blinked and took a deep breath. "It's from an Amazon," she said, picking up a pen and gesturing to the symbol of Aphrodite on the hilt. "Male warriors carved the mark of Ares into their weapons; the Amazons were patroned by Aphrodite and paid her homage as such." The detectives nodded. "Where did you find this? It looks... New?" Diana felt sick in her stomach. It was Persephone's; one of their fastest messengers. If her Mother had sent here, there was a message Diana desperately needed to hear. Like all Amazons, Persephone would give up her breath, her life, before giving up her sword.
Batman: -The detectives seemed impressed by her reaction.- “An amazon? Thought they died out in the 1920’s down in South America.” –Bruce then chimed in.- “Guys, I’d hate to intrude but, we’re in the middle of something…” –The men looked at Bruce with a glare.- “We’re investigating in a murder, what could possibly be more important than that?” –Bruce suddenly sunk into his playboy personality and adjusted his collar coming up with an idea.- “Uhh-…Daughter trouble…” –The detectives blinked at Bruce.- “Please sir, we’ll only be a minute. We found this on a body wearing a full costume, looks brand spanking new as well. I’d like to show you pictures but, the body isn’t a pretty sight. Her bodily fluids were sucked right out of her. Poof! Gone.” <c>
Batman: -Bruce then said.- “Where was the body found?” –The Detectives looked at Bruce, viewing him more as a nuisance now more than anything. Bogart would say.- “We’re the detectives, don’t you worry about it.” –Bruce crossed his arms.- ‘Your accent sounds fake, anyway.'
Wonder Woman: "Not as in from the Amazon," she said shaking her head. "The lost Island of Themyscira, Paradise Island." Diana went to her shelves and pulled a book down, opening it to where the story begins. "It is said that after their rape at the hands of Jason and Hercules, Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena and Hestia granted the Amazons a safe haven, an island of their own where no men could step foot," she closed the book. "But that's just a fairy tale," one of the detectives said. "And yet you have a dead Amazon in your morgue," she said <c>
Wonder Woman: "Thank you for your time, Doctor," the second detective said in a calmer tone. Both making an effort to ignore the playboy in the corner. "Here is my card, may we contact you if we need further information?" "Of course Detective," she said, slipping her own card out of her skirt pocket. The detectives left and Diana couldn't help but smirk. "Daughter issues?" She asked Bruce <e>
Batman: -Bruce rolled his eyes.- “I was going to say divorce but, I don’t think they would believe it with how you are…” –Bruce paused and then said.- “Besides I could’ve just made up name if they asked.- “Barbara, Cassandra, or Stephanie…Some common little girl’s name, they might not know I don’t have kids. Anyway, about this rod is it a part of a set or perhaps duplicates?” –Bruce leaned against her table looking at her, completely brushing off the detectives and their case.-
Wonder Woman: "I think it's bigger than that, Bruce," she said, lowering her voice. "That sword belonged to one of my Sisters; a messenger." She paused, shaking her head. "The staff was used by Circe, a powerful witch and enemy of the Amazons. She was banished centuries ago. It would not surprise me to learn she was behind my sister's death." She shook her head once again. "You said he turned into a pig?" She took a seat behind her desk, looking at Bruce. She hadn't had much exposure to him, and she was starting to see why. Clark must have anticipated the personality clash between them.
Batman: -Bruce raised his eye brow.- “Circe? Don’t get illusive with me, Diana. Are we talking a witch with frog potions or are we dealing with a God?” –Bruce’s voice growling as he wanted to get to the point. Depending on her answer he would follow up and say.- “When was the last time anyone saw her?” –Bruce paused and thought for a moment before saying.- “Do you think-…Maybe the old gods set something in motion bigger than life?”
Wonder Woman: "Don't try to threaten or intimidate me, rat boy," she growled as he got aggressive. He was used to being able to intimidate people, but Diana didn't roll over. "She's a sorceress, not a God, but she calls on their powers," Diana said. "She's an alleged consort of Ares, but that stands to be proven; he tends to prefer warriors to witches." She closed the book and looked up at him. "She was banished millenia ago for betraying my Mother," Diana spoke softly as she leaned back in the chair, her eyes cold. "She is very powerful, but ... I don't know. She should not have been able to break the binds. And if she has..." She hesitated. "It's my fight. I'm the one she's after, I am sure. There is a chance the Old Ones have unsettled the balance. If she were freed, she'd be after me for revenge."
Batman: “We need to call Doctor Fate…Get his input.” –Bruce pulled out his phone and attached a communication device for the Justice League.- “Batman to-...WOOOOOSSSSSHHHHHHHHH ZZzz…ZZZZZzzzz.“ –Bruce pressed buttons on the device, but nothing happened.- “Something is stopping the signal…Looks like we’re on our own. I left the rod in my car. Should we go and investigate your sister’s death? There might be clues at the scene.”
Wonder Woman: She nodded. "That very well could be the witch's workings," she said, standing up. "Persephone was a messenger," Diana admitted as she walked to the door. "If she was here, she was coming with word from the Queen for me. Perhaps Mother knows Circe is loose?" She looked Bruce over. "I assume you brought a change of clothes?" She quirked an eyebrow, sliding a hand into her briefcase and pulling out her tiara, placing it low on her brow and pulling her hair from it's bun. She folded her glasses and set them on her desk.
Batman: -Bruce nodded to her words.- “Of course, I even have a motorcycle and plane if you want to give either a test ride…Got a car?” –Bruce said leaving her office and making his way to the campus parking lot towards a Black Camaro, he slipped into the driver seat and adjusted the driver seat, slipping back into reach into the cramped back space to grab his suit from a black bag, immediately undressing out of the business suit and into he batsuit.-
Wonder Woman: Did he really just ask if she needed a ride? She was hovering when he asked and she couldn't help but laugh. "No thanks," she said with a smirk. "I can handle my own transportation needs." Her fingers deftly unbuttoned the blouse, revealing the red and gold bustier. She slid out of her pencil skirt and tucked her clothes away in a closet, a short, blue feathered leather skirt with white stars round her waist. She slipped into the red and white boots and was out the window. Graceful, quiet and quick, just the way she always did it. She could see Bruce getting into the Camero. She'd be on the scene before he got his knickers on. Diana flew towards the core where the detectives had found Persephone. She had been so close, and likely terrified. What kind of threat would have pushed the Amazons
Wonder Woman: to risk the dangers of Man's World for an outcast such as herself. All Diana could think of was that her mother was in dire trouble and Circe was at the bottom of it.
Batman: -The scene of the corpse still smelled terrible, the grassy scenery had green plants, bushes, and trees. The body, however, marked an area of brown, red, and yellow colors in the plant life. The very resting place of the body there would be signs of unnoticeable to a typical person or investigator. A tree branch was damaged by what appeared to be lightning
